Kevin Jerome Gilyard, better known by his stage name Kevin Gates, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He was born on February 5, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Gates had a troubled childhood. He lost contact with his father as a child. They did reconnect when he was a teenager, however, his father died shortly after due to AIDS when Gates was just 14. The young Kevin was also arrested once for joyriding in a stolen vehicle. However, he also started rapping in the midst of all that at age 14.

Gates signed his first record deal with the indie label Dead Game Records at age 21. He often collaborated with two fellow Louisiana hip hop artists, Boosie Badazz and Webbie. They are both featured on Gates’ first mixtape, “Pick of Da Litter” from 2007. He put out another mixtape in 2008, but in the same year, he was also sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to an illegal gun possession charge (he was a prohibited possessor due to prior felony convictions). He was released in 2011, and released a brand new mixtape by 2012. This caught the attention of famed rapper Lil Wayne, which led to Gates signing a management deal with Wayne’s label Young Money Entertainment. In 2014, he got to go on his first nationwide Kevin Gates concert tour, the “Stranger Than Fiction Tour”.

Gates released 13 mixtapes before finally putting out his debut album, “Islah” in January 2016 through his own label, Bread Winners' Association, and the major American label Atlantic Records. It became a massive hit, peaking at the #2 spot on the famous Billboard 200 chart. Since then, the Louisiana rapper has released 2 more studio albums and 4 more mixtapes. The best selling album in his discography has remained his first one, Islah from 2016, which sold around 2 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Kevin Gates album came out in June 2022, with the title “Khaza”.
