Staind is an American rock band. They were formed in 1995 in Springfield,Massachusetts. The founding members were lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis (born in 1972 in Rutland, Vermont), lead guitarist Mike Mushok (1970, Ludlow, Massachusetts), bassist Johnny April (1965, Enfield, Connecticut), and drummer Jon Wysocki (1971, Northampton, Massachusetts).
Lewis and Mushok were the firsts to meet each other out of the founders, they got introduced at a Christmas party in 1993. Lewis recruited his friend April, while Mushok brought Wysocki to form a new band in 1995. The very first Staind concert was played in February 1995. They originally chose the name “Stain”, but had to add a d to the end since that one was already taken. Also, they started off as a cover band, playing songs by such bands as Korn, Rage Against the Machine, or Alice in Chains. They put out their first album of original songs in November 1996, with the title “Tormented”. It failed to gain any commercial success.
What changed their luck was a Staind concert, opening for the famous rap rock band Limp Bizkit. Initially, Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst was appalled by Staind’s album cover and thought they were satanists, so he tried to remove them from the ticket. However, he failed to do so, and once he actually heard them perform, he was very much impressed. Durst even signed them with his label Flip Records. They released the second Staind album, “Dysfunction”, in April 1999. This record performed a lot better than their first one, having topped Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart, while also peaking at the #74 on the overall Billboard 200 chart.
Since then, the Massachusetts rock stars have put out 5 more studio albums, thus they have 7 in total. The best selling one among them is “Break the Cycle” from May 2001, which sold around 6.4 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Staind album came out September 2011, the self-titled “Staind”. In 2012, the band announced that they were going on a hiatus, which lasted until 2014. They have been going on Staind concert tours on and off ever since, but have not released a new album. The biggest hits in the Staind setlist to date are “It’s Been a While” (2001), “Outside” (also 2001), “So Far Away” (2003), and “Something to Remind You” (2011).
