The Driver Era, often abbreviated to TDR or stylized as THE DRIVER ERΛ, is an American alt rock musical duo. They were formed in 2018 in Los Angeles, California. The founders and only members to be ever part of the group are two brothers, vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ross Lynch (born in 1995 in Littleton,Colorado), and vocalist and lead guitarist Rocky Lynch (1994, Littleton, Colorado).
The two founding brothers, along with the thirdLynch brother, Riker, their sister, Rydel, and the unrelated Ellington Ratliff, were part of the pop rock band "R5". R5 was founded in 2009 and lasted for nearly a decade, dismantling in 2018. They put out two albums together, “Louder” in 2013, and “Sometime Last Night” in 2015. The latter one reached the #6 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
However, suddenly, R5 posted a video titled “The Last Show” to their YouTube channel in February 2018. Soon after, all the official R5 social media accounts had their names changed to “The Driver Era”, and all formerly produced, R5-branded content was deleted.
Ross and Rocky Lynch later explained what had happened. After they produced their new single “Preacher Man”, an alt rock song, their label, Hollywood Records, was very impressed. In fact, so impressed, that they wanted the band to completely break away from its pop roots and do a whole re-brand, as they predicted more success for them that way. With the genre and name change, changes in personnel had to be made as well, as to not confuse their audience.
Thus, The Driver Era was born. Their debut single, the aforementioned “Preacher Man”, reached the #39 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart upon its release. In 2019, they already went on their first nationwide The Driver Era concert tour.
The band’s debut album came out in June 2019, with the title “X”. However, unlike their first single, this record failed to chart on Billboard. Their album, “Girlfriend” was released in October 2021, while the latest new The Driver Era album was released in September 2022, with the title “Summer Mixtape”.
The biggest hits in The Driver Era setlist to date are “Preacher Man” (2018), “Feel You Know” (2018), and “A Kiss” (2021). While they have not been doing well in terms of album sales, they’ve had multiple sold-out TheDriver Era concert shows. Most recently, they had a full house at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Canada in August 2022.
