Rainbow Kitten Surprise, often abbreviated to RKS, is an American alternative rock band. They were formed in 2013 in Boone, North Carolina. The founding members were lead vocalist Ela Melo and guitarist and backing vocalist Darrick “Bozzy” Keller.
The two founders both attended Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and started writing original music together. They named their band “Rainbow Kitten Surprise”, based on something one of their friends said while high on morphine after a surgery. They released their first EP (Extended Play), the self-produced “Mary” while still living in their college dorm room. By that time, electric guitarist Ethan Goodpaster, drummer Jess Haney, and bassist Charlie Holt were also added to the line-up. And that line-up has not changed ever since.
RKS’s debut album came out in November 2013, with the title “Seven”. It was another self-produced record with no funding or push from anyone from the music industry. Their second album, the self-titled “RKS” from April 2015, however, was published by the indie label Spit Rail; while the latest new Rainbow Kitten Surprise album, “How To: Friend, Love, Freefall” from April 2018, was released by the Warner Music Group subsidiary Elektra Records. None of these records managed to chart in the US or elsewhere in the world. However, the track “Fever Pitch” off of their latest album reached the #34 spot on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in 2018. Also in 2018, they went on a major North American Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert tour to promote their new album.
The biggest hits in the Rainbow Kitten Surprise setlist to date are “First Class” (2013), the provocatively titled “Cocaine Jesus” (2015), the aforementioned “Fever Pitch” (2018), and “It’s Called: Freefall” (also 2018). RKS is known for their vocal support of the LGBTQ community. Check where the next Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert is playing near you on our page above.
