Garth Brooks is an American country singer and songwriter. He was born on February 7, 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Brooks was born into a musical family: his mother was a professional singer. While he did sing casually at family gatherings, as a teenager, his main focus was sports. He played football, baseball, and threw the javelin. Also, he learnt to play the guitar and the banjo.
He started performing at bars while studying advertising in college and also working as a bouncer. At age 23, Brooks made music his profession, still just playing in small taverns in and around Oklahoma. That is how entertainment attorney Rod Phelps discovered him at one of his gigs in Dallas, Texas, and agreed to produce his first demo tape.
Thus, his debut album, the self-titled “Garth Brooks” was released in April 1989 through the label Capitol Nashville. It became a massive hit, peaking at the #13 spot on the famous Billboard 200 charts and at the #2 spot on Billboard’s genre-specific country music chart. The most successful tracks on the album were “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” and “If Tomorrow Never Comes”. The success of his first album allowed Brooks to go on his first nationwide tour, even having a Garth Brooks concert as an opening act for country music legend Kenny Rogers.
The prolific country musician released 15 more albums since, thus he has 16 in total. The best selling among them has been the second one, “No Fences” from August 1990, with 17 million copies sold in total. Meanwhile, the latest new Garth Brooks album was simply titled “Fun”, and it came out in November 2020. The biggest hits the Garth Brooks setlist to date are the aforementioned “If Tomorrow Never Comes” (1989), “The Thunder Rolls” (1990), “Friends in Low Places” (also 1990), and “To Make You Feel My Love” (1998).
He is the only artist in music history to have 9 of his albums go diamond (over 10 million in sales), pulling ahead of none other than The Beatles with their 6 diamond albums. He has won two Grammy Awards and 17 American Music Awards as well. Garth Brooks has no relation to his namesake and fellow country singer Kix Brooks, one of the members of the famous country music duo Brooks & Dunn.
