Juan Luis Londoño Arias, better known by his stage name Maluma, is a Colombian singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born on January 28, 1994 in Medellín, Colombia. As a young boy, Maluma’s passion was soccer, rather than music. This changed in his teenage years. He started writing music for fun which impressed his friends. His uncle booked him a recording session in a studio as a birthday present. The recording also impressed the music producers present.
He had his first, independently produced national hit at age 16 in 2010, with a song titled “Farandulera” (meaning “Showgirl” in English). As a result, he got signed by Sony Music Colombia. His stage name is composed of the first syllables of his family members, his mother Marlli, his father Luis, and his sister Manuela.
Maluma released his debut album in “Magia” (“Magic”) in August 2012. It went certified gold in his home country of Colombia, which means it reached 10,000 copies in sales. His real big breakthrough came with the publication of his second album, “Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy” in October 2015, which topped the charts on Billboard’s Top 100 Latin American Albums list. In 2016, he got to go on his first international Maluma concert tour, called the "Maluma World Tour".
Since then, he has produced 3 more studio albums, thus he has 5 in total. The best selling among them has been “F.A.M.E.” from May 2018, which sold over 850,000 copies. The latest new Maluma album came out in June 2022, with the sensual title "The Love & Sex Tape". Maluma’s biggest hits to date are “El perdedor” (“The Loser”, 2015), ”Borro Cassette” (“Erase the Cassette”, also 2015), “Felices los 4” (“Happy 4”, 2018), and “Corazón” (“Heart”, also 2018) featuring MC Nego do Borel.
He was also featured on the 2016 hit single by Shakira“Chantaje” (“Blackmail”), the music video of which currently has over 2.5 billion views on YouTube. On top of all that, Maluma has also dabbled in acting. He’s appeared in the 2022 romantic comedy-drama “Marry Me” starring fellow Latin American music star Jennifer Lopez; and he lent his voice to a character in the 2021 animated Disney movie “Encanto” as well.
