Roger Harry Daltrey is an English singer and songwriter. He was born on March 1, 1944 in London, United Kingdom. Daltrey was born during World War II. His father was drafted into the army, leaving him alone with his mother. They evacuated to Scotland. Growing up, Daltrey performed very well academically. At age 13, he made his own guitar out of a block of wood, then joined a band named “The Detours”. He first became the lead guitarist, then the lead singer in the group. Meanwhile, he was expelled from school for smoking tobacco.
In 1964, Daltrey’s band changed their name to “The Who” after they found out about another band performing under The Detours name. They had their first hit single under the new name in 1965, “I Can't Explain” charted in the top 10 in the UK and in the top 100 over in the US. This led to a record deal for the band with Decca Records. However, it wasn’t all good for Daltrey himself - he got kicked out of the band for beating up drummer Keith Moon for supplying the other members with illegal drugs. Daltrey was soon readmitted after he showed remorse and vowed never to use physical violence again. It was a pledge that he was not able to fulfill, as there were incidents of mutual violence between The Who members later on, including Daltrey too.
Daltrey began writing solo songs in 1973. The first one, “Giving It All Away”, became a hit right off the bat. He kept putting out solo work, while staying with The Who as well until their 1983 break-up. However, that hiatus was short-lived, as they were back together by 1985. The Who had been breaking up and reuniting back and forth until 1999 - they’ve been permanently together since, touring and releasing new music.
Daltrey was the lead singer on all 12 studio albums released by the legendary rock band The Who. On top of that, he has released 10 solo albums as well, the first being the self-titled “Dartley” from April 1973. The best selling one among them is “Ride a Rock Horse” from July 1975, which peaked at the #28 spot on the famous Billboard 200 in the US, and the #14 spot on the OCC chart in the UK. Meanwhile, the latest new Roger Daltrey album came out in June 2018, with the title “As Long as I Have You”.
The biggest solo hits in the Roger Daltrey setlist to date are “One of the Boys” (1977), “Without Your Love” (1980), and “Just a Dream Away” (1980). Check where the next Roger Daltrey concert is playing near you on our page above.
