Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, better known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Perry was born to two Pentecostal pastor parents. Thus, she had a very religious upbringing, with her first exposure to music being gospel songs. The young Katy discovered popular music through her friends as a teenager, which impacted her greatly. She also started to sing in a choir, learnt to play the guitar, and wrote songs of her own.
She eventually got discovered in her late teens by two rock musicians, Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp. They brought her out to Nashville, Tennessee to give her further music training. After that, she never even got back to finish high school so she could focus on her new career. Soon, she signed with the Christian label Red Hill Records, through which she released her self-titled debut album “Katy Hudson” in March 2006. However, her first project was an absolute flop. It only sold a humbling 200 copies, and the label went bankrupt soon after.
Luckily, this didn’t mean the end of Perry’s career. She switched to secular music, with now mostly pop music being played reguralry at a Katy Perry concert, and adopted the stage name “Katy Perry”, after her mother’s maiden name. She moved back to California, and was signed by Columbia Records. Her first pop album came out in June 2008, with the title “One of the Boys”. It became a massive hit, selling 7 million copies worldwide. The most successful tracks on it were “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n' Cold”.
Since then, the pop diva has released 4 more studio albums, thus she has 5 in total (6 if you count her gospel album released under the “Katy Hudson” name). The most successful among them was the aforementioned "One of the Boys", followed by “Teenage Dream” (2010) which sold 6 million copies. Her latest new Katy Perry album to date is “Smile”, released in August 2020.
Perry’s biggest hits so far are “Fireworks” (2010), “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” (2011), “Roar” (2013), and “Dark Horse” (2014). She became the first female artist to have 5 singles from the same album hit the #1 spot on the famous Billboard 200 list in 2011. The halftime show at the 2015 Super Bowl featured a Katy Perry concert as well. Also, she was briefly married to British comedian and political commentator Russell Brand between 2010 and 2012.
