Dance Gavin Dance, sometimes abbreviated to DGD, is an American rock band. They were formed in 2005 in Sacramento, California. The founding members were clean vocalist Jonny Craig (born in 1986 in Minot, North Dakota), unclean vocalist Jon Mess (1985, Columbus, Ohio), lead guitarist Will Swan (1985, San Francisco, California), rhythm guitarist Sean O’Sullivan, bassist Eric Lodge, and drummer Matt Mingus.
Swan, Mingus, and Lodge used to play for the punk rock band “Farewell Unknown”. After its 2005 dissolution, they recruited vocalists Mess and Craig, and guitarist O’Sullivan to form a new band. They named it “Dance Gavin Dance”, after Craig’s idea, who originally wanted this name to be given to his former band, “Ghost Runner On Third”, as well. It comes from a chant they used to egg on one of his childhood friends with. Still in 2005, they self-produced their debut EP titled “Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean”. That later got picked up and re-released by the label Rise Records.
The same label published the band’s debut album, “Downtown Battle Mountain”, as well, in May 2007. It peaked at the #46 spot on Billboard’s new artist-specific Heatseekers chart. They also went on Dance Gavin Dance concert tours across the US to promote the record, with such well-known bands as Pierce the Veil or Alesana. In this period, they lost two of their founding members: O’Sullivan joined the experimental rock band “Consider the Thief” and was replaced by Zachary Garren. Craig left too after a heated argument with the band’s manager. He later rejoined the band but was kicked out for good in 2018 due to his drug abuse issues.
Since then, DGD has released 9 more studio albums, thus they have 10 in total. The best selling one among them is also the latest new Dance Gavin Dance album, “Jackpot Juicer” from July 2022, which peaked at #8 on the famous Billboard 200 chart in the US, while also reaching #35 on the OCC chart in the UK. The biggest hits in the Dance Gavin Dance setlist to date are “We Own the Game” (2015), “Inspire the Liars” (2016), and “Betrayed by the Game” (also 2016).
After many changes, the band’s current line-up is made up of 3 of the 6 founders, unclean vocalist Jon Mess (who left in 2008 but rejoined by 2010), lead guitarist Will Swan, and drummer Matt Mingus; as well as rhythm guitarist Andrew Wells, and clean vocalist Tilian Pearson.
