Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong, better known by her stage name Dido, is an English singer and songwriter. She was born on December 25, 1971 in London, United Kingdom. Dido was born on Christmas day, into an artistic family: her mother is a poet, while her father managed a publishing company. Her brother is a music producer known as Rollo. Dido was called by what is her stage name now by everyone from an early age. Her nickname was given after the legendary Queen of Carthage by the same name. Dido was taught music by classical composer Sinan Savaskan in her school. Later, she attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where she learnt to sing and play the violin, recorder, and piano. After graduating, she went to law school but dropped out to pursue music as her career.
At age 24, she recorded a demo tape with 10 tracks that she sent out to record labels and artist management companies. She was eventually signed by the Canadian Nettwerk Management. She had worked with her brother’s successful dance group, “Faithless”, prior as a vocalist, which helped her secure the deal. Dido’s debut album, titled “No Angel”, came out in June 1999. It became a massive hit, topping the OCC chart in the UK, and also peaking at the #4 spot on the Billboard 200 chart over in the US. Her popularity in America only grew when hip hop superstar Eminem asked her to let him sample her song “Thank You” for his new single “Stan”, which she was also featured on.
Since then, Dido has put out 4 more studio albums, thus she has 5 in total. The best selling one among them has remained her first one, “No Angel” from 1999, which sold a whopping 15 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, her latest record is titled “Still on My Mind”, which came out in March 2019.
The British pop star Dido’s biggest hits to date are the aforementioned “Thank You” (1998), “Here With Me” (1999), “White Flag” (2003), and “Don’t Leave Home” (also 2003).
