Jennifer Lynn Lopez, often shortened to J.Lo, is an American singer, dancer, and actress. She was born on July 24, 1969 in New York City, New York. Lopez was born into a Puerto Rican family and had a strict, Roman Catholic upbringing. She took part in school productions of musicals as a child. Because of her background, one of her favorite Broadway shows was "West Side Story". She started taking dance lessons at age 5, and by the time she was a teenager, she also gave lessons as a dance instructor. One of her students was famous American actress Kerry Washington. She did attend college but dropped out to make a living as a dancer, despite her stern parents’ misgivings.
