Jack Hody Johnson is an American singer, songwriter, filmmaker, and former professional surfer. He was born on May 18, 1975 in North Shore,Hawaii. Johnson’s father was a professional surfer in Hawaii, who started to teach him the sport when he was just 5. By age 17, Johnson was competing in the most prestigious surfing events in the world. However, a bad head injury ended his career even before he turned 18.
So, he picked another passion to pursue as a career, films. He appeared in the 1994 movie “The Endless Summer II” as a surfer. He moved to California to study filmmaking at the University of California, Santa Barbara. During all of this, he also frequently played the guitar, which he learnt at age 8. He also joined a college band. He even gave a Jack Johnson concert with his band as an opening act for the then-unknown DaveMatthews, who later became a widely successful artist with his band.
In 1999, Johnson’s song “Rodeo Clowns” was featured on the album “Philadelphonic” by the alt rock band “G. Love & Special Sauce”. It became a moderate hit, launching Johnson’s career in the music industry. His debut album came out in February 2001, a folk rock record titled “Brushfire Fairytales”. It became quite a success, peaking at the #34 spot on the Billboard 200 list in the US, while also reaching the #39 spot on the OCC chart in the UK.
Since then, Johnson has released 7 studio albums, thus he has 8 in total. The best selling one among them is “Sleep Through the Static” from February 2008, which topped the charts in the US and sold 1.7 million copies in the States alone. Meanwhile, the latest new Jack Johnson album came out in June 2022, with the title “Meet the Moonlight”.
Jack Johnson’s biggest hits to date are “Banana Pancakes” (2005), “Upside Down” (2006), “If I Had Eyes” (2007), and “I Got You” (2013). He’s also an accomplished filmmaker, having directed documentaries such as “Thicker than Water” in 2000, and “A Brokedown Melody” in 2004.
