Sertanejo is a popular music genre in Brazil that originated in the countryside regions during the 1920s. It has since evolved into a mainstream genre, capturing the hearts of millions of Brazilians and becoming one of the most commercially successful music styles in the country. In the sertanejo music scene, numerous artists perform in duos, often comprised of siblings. Historically, men have held a predominant role in this genre, such as Jorge e MateusChitãozinho e Xororó, and Luan Santana, but in the 21st century, some women, including Paula Fernandes, Maria Cecília, and Simone & Simaria.

MUSICALITY

Sertanejo music typically features a combination of acoustic guitars, violas, accordions, and percussion instruments, creating a rustic sound. The genre draws influences from traditional Brazilian popular music and incorporates elements from country and western music. Sertanejo can be further divided into two subgenres: Sertanejo Universitário, which has a more modern and pop-oriented sound, and Sertanejo Raiz, which maintains a traditional and nostalgic style.

The vocals play a significant role, with expressive performances that convey deep emotions and storytelling. Sertanejo's musical versatility and ability to adapt to different styles have contributed to its widespread popularity.

THEMES

Lyrically, sertanejo explores themes of love, heartbreak, family, and rural life. Many songs depict the joys and struggles of relationships, expressing emotions with heartfelt sincerity. The lyrics often paint vivid pictures of the simple pleasures of country living, nostalgia for hometowns, and the beauty of nature. Sertanejo songs also touch on themes of faith, patriotism, and cultural identity, resonating with people from different walks of life.

The term "Sertanejo" is derived from "sertão," a general term encompassing rural backlands situated away from coastal metropolitan regions. However, "sertão" is often used more narrowly to denote the interior regions away from the Brazilian Northeast.

Sertanejo, as a music genre, is distinct from the caipira culture and specifically originated in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná.

The music associated with this culture is referred to as "música caipira" or "música sertaneja" and is composed and performed in rural areas, featuring elements like the traditional 'moda de viola.' The instruments used by solo musicians or duos harken back to colonial Brazil and include the viola caipira (guitar).

FAMOUS ARTISTS

Sertanejo has produced numerous successful and influential artists who have achieved immense popularity and commercial success in Brazil and beyond. Some notable sertanejo artists include Chitãozinho e Xororó, Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano, Marília Mendonça, Henrique & Juliano, Gusttavo Lima, Maiara & Maraisa, Jorge & Mateus, and Luan Santana.

The emergence of modern sertanejo music can be traced back to the late 1960s when the duo Leo Canhoto e Robertinho introduced the electric guitar and incorporated influences from pop music. This marked a significant shift in the genre. During the 1970s, Sergio Reis, a member of the Jovem Guarda musical movement, made a noteworthy transition from pop to sertanejo. Another influential artist during this period was Renato Teixeira.

In the evolution of sertanejo music, a recycling phase begins with sertanejo universitário. Artists in this period diversify, with some returning to the roots of moda de viola, now referred to as "moda." This emerging segment is highlighted by CDs labeled "just fashion." Simultaneously, another group of artists follows the trends of the past, embracing the romantic sertão, exemplified by figures like Eduardo Costa and Léo Magalhães. In this new era, the lyrics expand beyond failed relationships, encompassing themes of women, drinking, love affairs, and sex. There's a noticeable influence from Brazilian funk, as well as elements of samba/pagode.
