Born in Detroit, USA, Diana Ernestine Earle Ross, also known by her stage name Diana Ross, is a legendary and incredible singer and actress known for her contribution to Motown and soul music. Diana became famous as the main singer of The Supremes, one of the top vocal groups of the 1960s. Her music covers various styles like R&B, disco, and adult contemporary.
Diana is also a successful actress. Her first big role was playing Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues," which won her a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination, making her the first African-American actress to get nominated for her first movie. She also sang on the soundtrack, which became her only solo album to hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Diana starred in two other movies, "Mahogany" in 75 and "The Wiz" in 78, and later appeared in TV films like "Out of Darkness" in 94.
When she was fifteen, Diana joined a group called The Primettes, which was connected to a male group called The Primes. Paul Williams, a member of the Primes, introduced her to music manager Milton Jenkins, who got her involved.
In the early 80s, Diana left Motown after over 20 years, getting $250,000. RCA offered her a $20 million deal with full control, which she took in 1981, making it history's priciest deal. Her first RCA album, "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," sold over a million copies in 1981. She started her production company, Anaid Productions, and toured extensively. She hosted her TV special, "Diana," with stars like Michael Jackson. Diana sang at Super Bowl XVI and got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1982. Her album "Silk Electric" went gold, but "Ross" in 1983 didn't reach the same heights.
In 2004, Diana and her daughter graced the cover of Essence for its 50th anniversary. She later paid tribute to Stevie Wonder at the Billboard Music Awards. In 2005, she performed at Tsunami Aid and launched her M.A.C. Icon makeup collection. Diana collaborated with Rod Stewart on "I've Got a Crush on You," reaching No. 19 on the Billboard chart.
