About The Bronx

MUSIC

Known for being home to world-famous artists like Billy Joel, The Bronx is one of the five major governmental districts in New York City, and has a great influence in the music universe, especially for old-school hip-hop, rock, and pop.

The Bronx has helped hip-hop grow, with artists like Cardi B. She's known for her hit songs. Grandmaster Caz and Melle Mel, who started hip-hop, are from The Bronx too. They changed the music with their ideas. These artists show how diverse and creative The Bronx's music scene is, making the city's music history richer.

In the early 19th century, the Bronx also played a key role in the development of Latin jazz. The Bronx Opera was established in the 1960s.

CULTURE

Just like the Bronx's influence on music, the district has always had a huge influence on culture in general as well. You'll find colorful street art on buildings and hear salsa and hip-hop music in the streets. The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the birthplace of hip-hop at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue are important places that celebrate creativity and bring people together. They give everyone a peek into what makes the Bronx special.

And if you're a fan of some good food, traditional Caribbean eateries in Tremont will always be there for you. Food markets in Fordham and local chefs are also a must-try.

HISTORY

From being inhabited by Lenape Native Americans to experiencing big changes over time, just like the other districts of New York City, the Bronx is the perfect example of strength and creativity, that eventually will overcome any problem.

The district rapidly urbanized over time, becoming a diverse hub of cultures and ideas. The borough played a pivotal role in shaping hip-hop culture, with landmarks like the Bronx River Center and the emergence of graffiti art highlighting its impact on urban arts and music.

The Bronx has been a center for social change and cultural shifts, from the Civil Rights movement to the global spread of hip-hop. Influential figures like Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc, who started hip-hop, came from The Bronx. They used music and art to empower and express themselves.
