Mor ve Ötesi (meaning “Purple and Beyond” in English) is a Turkish alternative rock band. They were formed in 1995 in Istanbul, Turkey. The founding members were vocalist and guitarist Harun Tekin (born in 1977 in Ankara, Turkey), bassist Alper Tekin, vocalist and guitarist Derin Esmer, and drummer Kerem Kabadayı (1977, Ankara, Turkey).
Harun Tekin and Kabadayı attended the same German-speaking high school in Istanbul. They formed a band named “Decision”. By 1995, they were joined by Alper Tekin and Esmer, and also renamed the group "Mor ve Ötesi". They recorded their first song under the new name that year. They also started performing the earliest versions of a Mor ve Ötesi concert in local venues. Their debut album, “Şehir” ("City") came out in June 1996, published by the major Turkish label Ada Music. The original bassist left the group right after their first record’s release, and was replaced by Burak Güven.
Interestingly, they also lost a band member after the release of their second album, which came out in January 1999: the guitarist from the original line-up, Esmer, moved to the United States to further pursue his ambitions as a musician. His place was filled by Kerem Özyeğin. However, the members of the band have stayed the same ever since for over 20 years now.
Since then, the Turkish alt rock band has released 7 more studio albums, thus they have 8 in total. The best selling one among them so far has been their 4th one, “Dünya Yalan Söylüyor” (“The World is Lying”), which came out in April 2004 and sold around 220,000 copies. Meanwhile, the latest new Mor ve Ötesi album was released in January 2022, with the title “Sirenler” (“Sirens”).
The biggest hits in the Mor ve Ötesi setlist to date are “Bir Derdim Var” (“I Have a Problem”, 2004), “Cambaz” (“Acrobat”, also 2004), “Oyunbozan” (“Spoilsport”, 2012), and “Sultan-ı Yegâh” (2018). The band represented Turkey at the Eurovision song contest with their single “Deli” (“Mad”) in 2008. They ended up placing 7th. Check where the next Mor ve Ötesi concert is playing on the page above.
