Stephanie Lynn “Stevie” Nicks is an American singer, songwriter, and music producer. She was born on May 26, 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona. Nicks was taught how to sing by her grandfather at 4, whom she used to sing duets with. She got a guitar for her 16th birthday, which she learnt to play. She also started to write her own songs. During high school, she joined the folk rock band “Changing Times”. In her senior year of high school, she met her future romantic and musical partner Lindsey Buckingham. They both played for the psychedelic rock band “Fritz”.
After Fritz disbanded, they continued as a duo. They put out their self-titled debut album, “Buckingham Nicks” in September 1973. She went on a Stevie Nicks concert tour with her partner in the American South to promote the record, but it failed to gain any significant commercial traction. As a result, their label, Polydor, dropped the pair. The next major step in Nicks’ career was joining the legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac as their lead singer. The band put out 6 albums with her on the vocals between 1975 and 1990. Those include “Rumours” from February 1977, which ended up becoming one of the best selling records of all time, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide.
Nicks ended up leaving Fleetwood Mac in 1990 after a dispute with Mick Fleetwood, but she did rejoin them for the band’s 1997 reunion, and she is still on board to this day. She also kicked off her solo career in the meantime, having put out her debut album on her own in July 1981, with the title “Bella Donna”. It ended up becoming a massive success, even topping the famous Billboard 200 chart upon its release.
Since then, the famed rock singer has put out 7 more solo albums, thus she has 8 in total. The best selling one has remained her first one, “Bella Donna” from 1981, which sold around 5 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, the latest new Stevie Nicks album came out in September 2014, with the title “24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault”. Her biggest hits to date are “Bella Donna” (1981, same title as her album), “Edge of Seventeen” (also 1981), “If Anyone Fails” (1983), and “Stand Back” (also 1983).
