Bajaga i Instruktori, often shortened to Bajaga, is a former Yugoslavian, now Serbian rock band. They were formed in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1984. The founding members were lead vocalist and guitarist Momčilo Bajagić Bajaga (born in 1960, in Bjelovar, Yugoslavia), bassist Miroslav Cvetković, guitarist Nenad "Nele" Stamatović, drummer Vladimir "Vlajko" Golubović, and backing vocalist Dejan Cukić.
Founder Bajagić had been playing in professional bands since he was just 14 years old. Originally, he was part of the band “TNT”. When that was dismantled, he played for a band named “Glogov Kolac” for a single live show, before finding his way to the hard rock band “Riblja Čorba” as a rhythm guitarist. There, he found success, with hits like the 1978 single “Lutka sa naslovne strane”. However, while part of the band, he also wrote a number of poppy, comedic songs that did not fit into the band’s image. So, Bajagić decided to form a supporting band around himself, and release them as a solo album with the title “Pozitivna geografija”.
To the surprise of even Bajagić himself, the record became a hit. So, while he wasn't planning on it, he held the first ever live Bajaga concert in 1984 in the Zagreb club Kulušić. Thus, the new band “Bajaga i Instruktori” was born - and retroactively, what was supposed to be Bajagić’s solo project, was rebranded as the band’s debut album. The members of his support band became the original line-up of Bajaga.
Later that year, Bajagić officially left the rock band Riblja Čorba to focus on his new endeavor. Since then, Bajaga i Instruktori has released 8 more studio albums, thus they have 9 in total. Album sales data is hard to find from the Yugoslavian/Serbian market. However, we do know that Bajaga is one of the best selling bands of all time from the region, and that the album “Daljina, dim i prašina” from June 2012 sold around 30,000 copies, according to the front man Bajagić himself. Meanwhile, the latest new Bajaga album came out in September 2020, with the title “Ovaj svet se menja”.
The biggest Bajaga hits to date are “Tisina” (1988), “Zivot je nekad siv nekad zut" (also 1988), “Moji drugovi” (1994), and “Zvezda” (2004). Bajaga i Instruktori is one of the few bands who managed to be popular and successful during both the Communist Yugoslavia, and during the capitalist Serbia era as well. Their line-up has gone through quite a few changes over the years. Currently, it’s made up of founder, lead singer, and guitarist Momčilo Bajagić, rhythm guitarist Živorad Milenković, keyboardist Aleksandar Lokner, drummer Čedomir Macura, bassist Miroslav Cvetković, and third guitarist Marko Nježić.
