Tropical house, also known as trop house or simply tropical, is a subgenre of EDM that emerged in the early 2010s. It is characterized by its laid-back and upbeat sound, drawing inspiration from tropical and Caribbean musical elements. The genre got famous by being played in music festivals like Tomorrowland, the genre was popularized by artists such as Thomas Jack, Klangkarussell, Kygo, Klingande, Robin Schulz, and Gryffin. Notable tropical house hits include Kygo's "Firestone," Klingande's "Jubel," Felix Jaehn's remix of "Cheerleader,"  Robin Schulz's remixes of "Waves" and "Prayer in C," and Lost Frequencies's remix of "Are You With Me."

MUSICALITY

The genre typically features smooth, catchy melodies, lush chords, and bright synthesizers. Tropical house often incorporates rhythmic elements such as steel drums, marimbas, or kalimbas, which give the music a distinctive tropical flavor.

As for the beats, they are generally mid-tempo, typically ranging from 100 to 115 beats per minute. The focus on melodic and harmonic elements, combined with light percussive arrangements, creates a relaxed atmosphere.

THEMES

The themes explored in tropical house are often centered around carefree and joyful experiences. The genre aims to transport listeners to a tropical paradise, evoking images of palm trees, sandy beaches, and vibrant sunsets.

Beyond the tropical imagery, the lyrics or vocal samples in tropical house songs can touch on themes of love, friendship, and positive energy.

FAMOUS ARTISTS

Tropical house has seen the rise of several prominent artists who have contributed to its popularity and success. Notable tropical house artists include the ones mentioned before, and also Matoma, Klingande, Sam Feldt, Felix Jaehn, and many more.

In 2012, Unicorn Kid pioneered tropical rave, however, it wasn't until 2013, marked by Klangkarussell's "Sun Don't Shine" and the emergence of producers like Kygo and Robin Schulz, that tropical house gained widespread popularity as a dance music trend. The following years, 2014 and 2015, saw the entry of producers such as Lost Frequencies, and Jonas Blue, contributing major tropical house hits.

In the mid-2010s, collaborations with artists like Justin Bieber and Little Mix propelled the genre to immense commercial success, giving rise to the term "tropical pop." This success was exemplified by the massive hit "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran.
